Yes! Seniors can do aikido!
In aikido, we do not use a great deal of physical force when performing techniques. Rather, we try to harmonise with our partner's strength in order to lead them in the direction we want them to move. Also, because there are no fights in aikido, students are under no pressure to compete and can set the pace for their own study.
During aikido practise, we always perform techniques on both the left and the right sides which is beneficial for our sense of balance. Many of the joint lock techniques in aikido gently bend the joints in their natural direction - this stimulates blood flow in the joints and is good for flexibility. And these are just a few of the health benefits of aikido!
At Yoshinkan Aikido Ryu, we currently offer three classes for senior citizens. Choose the day of the week and the time best suited for you and see what aikido has to offer!
